Oh, the Places You’ll Go: Writing from Experience
Date: 4:30pm - 6:00pm EDT April 15, 2014
2014 Mary Wood Fellow, poet Shara Lessley gives an informal talk on her writing craft.
People love to ask students What next? Perhaps a better question is, Where to? In this colloquium we’ll talk about entering new cities and countries, professional and artistic spaces, and the intersection between what’s real and what’s invented. Up for discussion: the extent to which the past—that sense of place we carry with us—serves as a source of stability and a wellspring for creative work. We’ll consider how to avoid the pitfalls of writing about culture from an outsider’s perspective, as well as why writers should embrace the tension between where we’ve been and the uncharted territory we’ve yet to discover.
This event is part of the 2014 Mary Wood Fellowship. This year’s Fellow, Shara Lessley, will be in-residence at Washington College from April 14-18, 2014.
