Our fifty international students from 28 countries thrive in our friendly, family-like atmosphere. Opportunities on a global scale abound at Washington College. Q: How many international students attend Washington College and where are they from?

A: Fifty-three students from twenty-four nations enrolled for the fall 2011 semester; about 4.0% of the undergraduate students who attend the College are international citizens. International student enrollments by country of citizenship are as follows:

Q: Is a TOEFL score required for admission?

A: International applicants who are non-native speakers of English must present a recommended TOEFL score of at least 550 (213 computer-based score, 79 internet-based). Information about the TOEFL exam, test dates, and test sites can be found at www.toefl.org. Washington College will also accept results from the IELTS exam. An overall score of 6.5 or better is preferred. Also required for application is a completed Certification of Finances (PDF).

Q: Is a health form required?

A: Yes, a health form is required for all enrolled students. Download the Health Form here (PDF).

Q: Is health insurance provided?

A: Yes, all international students are required to have a health insurance plan. The college automatically provides insurance at a cost of approximately $900 per year.

Q: Does Washington College provide instruction or support in English as a Second Language?

A: No. Washington College does not currently offer ESL classes.

Q: Are international student services available?

A: Yes. International student services are provided through our Office of International Programs.

Q: Is the International Baccalaureate recognized for advanced standing at Washington College?

A: Yes! Students who receive grades of 5, 6, or 7 in the Higher Level examinations may receive a maximum of one full year of credit.

Q: Does Washington College offer scholarships or financial aid to international students?

A: Washington College does not offer full tuition scholarships. However, every international applicant who qualifies for admission to Washington College is automatically considered for a Colin Ferguson Tuition Grant. These grants range in amount from $5,000 to $17,500 per year and are offered on the basis of scholastic achievement. Academic records, the admission essay, and letters of recommendation are considered for the awarding of a Colin Ferguson Tuition Grant.

The maximum annual award available to an international student is $17,500. The 2011-2012 charges for Tuition ($37,882), Room ($4,180), Board ($4,048) and Fees ($660) at Washington College total $46,770. Therefore, international students who apply for admission to the College should have $26,000 - $27,000 in personal or sponsored funds to meet their annual educational expenses.

On-campus employment is available for international students. Please note that part-time campus employment, as allowed by the F1 visa status, will allow a student to earn academic year (nine month) wages of approximately $1,500.

All international students are required to file a Certification of Finances (PDF), regardless of financial need or scholarship eligibility.

As an NCAA Division III school, Washington College does not offer athletic scholarships.

Q: How can I obtain a student visa (F1) from Washington College?

A: International citizens who are admitted to Washington College are issued the I-20 upon receipt of the required $500.00 enrollment deposit, a completed financial affidavit, and complete immunization records, and chest x-ray report.
