Kohl Gallery

Mission

It is the mission of the Kohl Gallery at Washington College to

  • Foster visual and cultural literacy and an understanding and appreciation of the visual arts and related artistic practices

  • Inspire critical analysis and discussion of issues and concerns of historical, social or cultural significance raised by the arts, primarily but not exclusively the visual arts.

The Kohl Gallery fulfills its mission by offering art exhibitions and public programs and by bringing artists, art historians, critics and curators to campus for the education and enjoyment of the Washington College community, the community of Chestertown and beyond.

Exhibits and public programs at the Kohl Gallery will

  • Broaden our understanding of what constitutes art today and inspire discussion of the nature and meaning of art and its importance in human existence

  • Present art of the past and represent the history of art in thought provoking ways consistent with contemporary curatorial practices

  • Present the work of contemporary artists in ways that illustrate contemporary studio practices and emerging trends in art

  • Inspire and welcome related programming designed in collaboration with other departments, programs, organizations or groups at Washington College and in the community

  • Expand opportunities for students to study art history, contemporary curatorial and critical practices in art and art theory, museum methods and gallery operations.

In this way, the Kohl Gallery contributes to the mission of Washington College “to develop in its students the habits of analytic thought, aesthetic insight, imagination, ethical sensitivity, and clarity of expression.”
